CHILDREN’S PRIVACY POLICY for adventuresofriley.com
PRIVACY:
Adventuresofriley.com believes in the power of children to make change, and
encourages both them and their parents to use, enjoy and learn from our web
site. While we support the interactive nature of online media, we also strive
to educate parents and children about how to appropriately safeguard their privacy
on the Web. That is why Eaglemont Press and adventuresofriley.com is committed
to complying fully with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of
1998. Our information collection practices are described below.
COLLECTION OF INFORMATION:
Non-Personal Information:
Certain, non-personal information about site visits is recorded by the standard
operation of the Internet servers on which our web sites are operated. This
non-personal information may include the type of operating system used, the
type of browser being used by the visitor, IP addresses, and the number and
frequency of visitors to our site.
Adventuresofriley.com offers children a certain amount of activities that do
not require them to provide any personal information. In using these features,
however, Eaglemont Press and adventuresofriley.com may collect certain non-personal
information from children under 13 by using small text files known as cookies.
Cookies are used to anonymously recognize visitors to our site, to determine
the number of unique visitors to our site, and to ascertain which site pages
they visit.
A visitor is always free to decline cookies, but in so doing, your child may
not be able to use certain features on our site. The “Help” menu
on your browser should explain how to not accept new cookies, how to have your
browser inform you when you receive a new cookie, and how to erase cookies from
your hard drive.
Personal Information:
Under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, no web site operator
can require, as a condition to participate in an activity, that a child younger
than 13 years of age disclose more information than is reasonably necessary.
Eaglemont Press and adventuresofriley.com fully comply with this requirement.
Our web site advises children under 13 that they are not permitted to order
merchandise or join the Official Riley’s World Kid’s Club themselves
and that their parents must do so on their behalf. Parents or guardians are
required to demonstrate their consent by submitting a credit card number. By
providing your credit card information, you are granting us permission to invite
your child to explore Riley’s World and to share their ideas and creations
with other children (through e-mail postcards to friends, high score postings,
posting of original artwork, contest entries, etc.). As part of our safety promise
to all Riley’s World members, we use a credit card to verify each new
member’s identity. Your card will be charged 50 cents for the shipping
of your Riley's World membership.
To order merchandise or join the Official Riley’s World kid’s club,
parents will need to provide the child’s name, address, telephone number,
gender and birthdate as well as credit card information to verify consent.
USE OF INFORMATION:
We may use children’s personal information in three general ways:
Electronic Postcards–We may collect children’s online contact information
to allow them to send electronic postcards and other communications to third
parties, such as their friends. Unless we hear from a child’s parent or
guardian to the contrary, we will assume consent to this. In order to send electronic
postcards, children will be asked to provide their e-mail addresses as well
as the recipient’s e-mail addresses. All information collected for electronic
postcards is used only to send the requested electronic postcard and is deleted
from our system once the electronic postcard is sent.
Newsletters or Similar Activities– A child may request that we use his
or her online contact information to respond more than once to a specific request
(such as a newsletter a contest entry and subsequent award, or to participate
in other online activities). If so, we will not use this information for any
other purpose without the parent’s verifiable consent.
Communication with Children and Other Uses– We may also use the personal
in-formation we collect online (1) to enable children to use certain features
of the adventuresofriley.com website; (2) to communicate with children regarding
upcoming events, promotions, or activities on the adventuresofriley.com website,
and to answer any questions they have about the adventuresofriley.com website
or post to the “Ask Riley” feature; (3) to enroll children in the
Riley’s World Kid’s Club and subscribe them to the related monthly
newsletter; (4) to conduct marketing research and (5) to protect the security
or integrity of this website and to take precautions against liability.
Adventuresofriley.com does not offer activities such as chat rooms or message
boards that would allow a child or the site to disclose the child’s personal
information publicly.
INFORMATION SHARING AND DISCLOSURE:
We will never share a child’s personal information with third parties
except:
Adventuresofriley.com may share personally identifiable information about a
child with other third parties providing services on our behalf, such as in
connection with the winning of a prize or contest or when we need to send information
to companies that work on our behalf to provide a product or service that has
been requested by a parent on behalf of a child.
Adventuresofriley.com may also disclose children’s personally identifiable
information in order to respond to subpoenas, court orders or legal processes,
to the extent permitted by law, or when any future subsidiaries, affiliated
companies or successor companies (resulting from a merger or acquisition) have
a need for such information.
Unless we specifically say otherwise, any companies which work on our behalf
to provide a product or service do not have any right to use the personally
identifiable information we provide to them beyond what is necessary to assist
us.
If adventuresofriley.com were to release information to third parties in the
future, parents and guardians would be notified and given the option of consenting
or not. Parents and guardians have the right to consent to the collection and
use of their child’s personal information, without consenting to the disclosure
of information to third parties.
SECURITY OF INFORMATION:
We maintain physical, electronic and procedural safeguards to protect your personally
identifiable information. We allow access to personal information only to persons
engaging in activity provided for by the adventuresofriley.com Children’s
Privacy Policy. We operate secure data networks protected by industry standard
firewall and password protection. Adventuresofriley.com has security measures
in place to attempt to protect against loss, misuse, or alteration of your user
data under our control. While we cannot guarantee that loss, misuse or alteration
to data will occur, we make every reasonable effort to prevent such occurrences.
You must promptly notify us if your credit card is stolen or used without permission.
In such an event, we will cancel that credit card number and update our records
accordingly.
CHANGES TO THIS PRIVACY STATMENT:
On occasion, it may be necessary for us to change the terms of the adventuresofriley.com
Children’s Privacy Policy. To ensure that you are aware of the current
privacy practices, we recommend that you check this site periodically. We will
not materially change how we handle previously collected information without
providing notice and choice as to how we use that information.
PARENTAL ABILITY TO UPDATE OR DELETE INFORMATION:
How You Can Review Collected Information
We believe that parents should be involved in their children’s online
activities. By e-mailing a request to info@adventuresofriley.com, we will provide
parents and guardians with a description of the categories of personal information
we have collected from their children and an opportunity to review all personal
information we have collected from their children. We will also honor requests
from parents and guardians that we delete, correct or update any personal information
we have collected from their children, or that we stop any additional use of
this personal information. We take all reasonable precautions to ensure that
the person requesting information about a child is that child’s parent
or guardian.
